It is insanely difficult to explain to people what I do for a living. They ask. And every time, they ask me a question like that, I go through the mental exercise to choose what to say and all it does is confuse them a lot. They almost always think that I’m lying. 😀
So, I thought why not just write a post where I explain how I earn money by working from home. I have been working from home for over two years now. I went full-time with this work from home lifestyle in January 2015 (I was still in college then, but working full-time).
My income sources have changed in two years. Some still stay the same, though. I picked up great projects, got bored of them and left them. So, I cannot say I have been making the same amount of money all this time. It always varies.
The most inconvenient question an Indian has to tackle with is how much you earn. Any random stranger wouldn’t be ashamed or at least, reluctant to ask how much you earn. Seriously! I have stranger aunties quizzing me about what I do and what I earn while I am deep engrossed in a book and make it clear that I am not even interested in the conversation.
However, to all the people who know me and still are curious (why are you?), I can never tell you an amount. Because it changes. But if that makes you feel good, I am not rich. Yet.
I don’t have one income source
Yes. I am a firm follower of the saying that you should never keep all your eggs in one basket. So, I try to diversify. ALL THE TIME. One income source is never going to be enough for me. But what are those income sources at present – in 2017?
How I Earn Money By Working From Home?
Marketing and consulting services
My top-most income source is working with this awesome Indian ethnic wear brand and using my skills as a marketer to help their new website achieve some big targets.
My job involves doing everything – overlooking the product inventory, state of the website, prepare marketing materials, prepare content, PPC advertising, Facebook advertising, SEO, social media marketing, email marketing and content marketing.
I am slowly making my way upwards with this project for we had technical issues that had to be fixed and even though, I learned developing websites for four years (I studied Information Technology in college), I cannot develop websites.
Do I provide such services to others? Yes. I try to do it as a freelancer, but lately, I have been focusing on just this one for it’s a fairly large project.
2. Writing as a fashion blogger
So, I am not sure if I am allowed to reveal the name of the company I’m working with but if you have been reading my content over there, awesome!
I talk about all things fashion and just write some cool articles on this platform and boom! I get money in the pocket at the end of the month.
This is actually a very new project I have taken up after I left one project that I was really not enjoying working on. I had been working with those people for over three years (first part-time and then full-time) but the atmosphere of their organization became pathetic which was my cue to move on. Hence I did and next day, I had this opportunity in my hand. Luck is rarely on my side but this time it was.
Yes. I own a book tube channel where I talk about books. It helps me earn money. Again, how much I earn with this channel varies unlike the first two I mentioned which are pretty much enough for me to survive in Delhi and still save some money.
I charge for doing book reviews and sponsored videos and that’s how I earn through it.
Yes, this very blog helps me earn some extra pocket money as well. To be honest, it stayed neglected for a long time. Even now, all I do is write and let the already existing audience read it. It’s not enough as blogging is about 20% writing and 80% promotion. I just don’t have enough time (or let’s just say I am too lazy) to do the part that does an 80% contribution to the success of a blog.
But still, I am lucky enough to, or let’s just say I worked on this blog pretty well when it started, that I still get good traffic and sponsored posts opportunities almost every month.
Well, you cannot really say that money saved is money earned if you’re just focusing on the usual savings methods like F.D.s. They do fetch you interest but that’s close to pennies and they almost never beat the inflation.
Hence, I invest in mutual funds and stocks to generate some more passive income. I have a SIP (systematic investment plan) for mutual funds while I am still learning how to invest in stocks.
Those are the five ways how I earn money by working from home. I do plan to diversify further by opening up a new online shop as well as helping people with marketing consulting. But let’s see when I do that.
