The year 2013 is about to end soon. For music lovers like me, this year has given some of the wackiest and some of the most honeyed bollywood music. While most of the “blockbuster” movies failed to create any impact with their music, the hits and super-hits of the year did the melody magic.

bollywood music

The year started with “racy” and foot-tapping tracks of ‘Race 2’. The album has some good songs. But, if compared with ‘Race’ it undoubtedly loses the race and falls flat. ‘Mann Mera’ from the movie ‘Table No. 21’ was successful in creating hype among youngsters, especially guitarists. ‘Murder 3’ also failed to repeat the melody magic of the ‘Murder’ brand.

With its earthy melodious music, with a touch of soft rock, ‘Kai Po Che!’ did a great job in music section as well. All the three songs of the album were pleasant and soothing. ‘Kaise bataoon’ from the movie ‘3G’ was also a very well sung song (hats off to KK).

Then after a long period of senseless and painful music, finally, ‘Aashiqui 2’ came as a “savior” for bollywood music lovers. While ‘Tum Hi Ho’ became the love anthem of the year, ‘Sun Raha Hai” topped the charts all across India for the raw passion and hurt it portrays. All the 11 songs of the movie were tuneful and a treat for bollywood music lovers.

After a while, ‘Go Goa Gone’ created a buzz among youngsters with its wacky songs like ‘Khoon choos le’ and ‘Babaji Ki Booti’ which is also a bollywood’s tribute to dope. The reggae feel of the song makes it stand out of the lot.

With ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, Pritam did a great job. This album has a perfect blend of fun and peppy songs along with soulful melodies.

‘Ambarsariya’ from the movie ‘Fukrey’ was also an instant hit. It became very popular among the youth. The rustic rendition of the song along with languid pace and dulcet guitar compliment the feel of the song completely. Good job by Ram Sampath and Sona Mohapatra.

‘Raanjhanaa’ is also a familiar name in the “good movies with good music” list of 2013 bollywood movies. Songs like ‘Tum Tak’ and the title track ‘Raanjhanaa’ have a rare sense of innocence in them. The combination of Irshad Kamil’s beautiful lyrics and Rahman’s soulful music is a treat for typical Rahman fans. I’d say that since ‘Rockstar’, this is Rahman’s finest work.

After ‘Kai Po Che’, Amit Trivedi again did the “Melody Magic” with his compositions in ‘Lootera’. The songs have a vintage and earthy feel to them. Lyrics compliment the compositions perfectly. Songs like ‘Sawaar loon’ and ‘Zinda’ are very mellifluous and soulful. It is the best work of Amit in 2013.

‘Zinda’ from the movie ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, composed by Shankar Mahadevan, is an “inspiration anthem” of 2013. The song goes from hard rock to soft melody very amazingly. Another one from the album ‘Maston Ka Jhund’ is especially for lads. It is very enjoyable and “serious male bonding time” type song which has got a different “x-factor” about it. Apart from these, whole album is very nice. The musical trio of SEL has done a brilliant job.

Some of the other movies which were successful in creating a BUZZ in bollywood music section with their couple of good and peppy songs included ‘Issaq’, ‘Phata Poster…’, ‘Boss’, ‘Ram-Leela’, ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’, ‘R…Rajkumar’, ‘Chennai Express’.

Apart from these, some movies which were expected to deliver good melodious music disappointed us this year. Some of the Blockbusters like ‘Dhoom 3’and ‘Krrish 3’ failed to repeat the magic like their previous parts.

Well, this was all about the BEST and NOT SO GOOD music of 2013. You must be thinking why I didn’t use the “BEST AND THE WORST” title? This is because being a music lover; I can’t categorize any type of music as ‘worst” music. So for me, it’s the “BEST and NOT SO GOOD”.

Hope to get some amazing quality music in the coming year. Fingers crossed!!
